On 6th June 2026, the Rehab Carnival was organized at the Rehabilitation Institute in memory of Dr. Mary Verghese’s birth anniversary. The carnival serves as a gateway to various avenues that contribute to the overall development of patient care within the Institute. Every year, the proceeds from this event are channelled towards a fund that supports patient care within the Rehabilitation Institute. At the same time, it creates a welcoming space for individuals to socialize, connect, and participate in a shared celebration.
The carnival provides patients and caregivers with an opportunity to actively participate and contribute to the event through the sale of food and other items. Many prepare and sell dishes that reflect their culture, individuality, and personal interests. In doing so, the event not only supports them but also keeps patients and caregivers at the very heart of the celebration.
The carnival comes alive with a variety of food stalls, games, and recreational activities such as face painting, mehendi, archery, and much more. It is also an event of great significance to the Mary Verghese Trust (MVT), as trainees use this platform to showcase the skills they have acquired during their training. Each participant adds to the essence of the event by bringing forward their unique identity, talents, and creativity.
The experience encourages them to take on responsibilities, manage their time effectively, improve their communication skills, and gain practical knowledge in areas such as sales and accounting. Events such as these open doors for them to explore the possibilities of leading an independent and productive life despite their disabilities. Their participation is vital not only for their own growth and confidence but also for inspiring and empowering the inpatients residing at Rehab.
This year, the MVT stall expanded its offerings beyond bags to include a range of food items, showcasing a variety of cuisines. The menu featured chapati and gravy for dinner, sandwiches, burgers, beverages such as lemonade and watermelon juice, carrot halwa, and popcorn. The chief cooks behind these preparations were the trainees themselves. Such exposure brought them to the forefront of the event, allowing them to demonstrate their abilities and prove themselves to be more than capable. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work contributed significantly to the success of the carnival and reflected the spirit of empowerment that the event seeks to foster.
